You may have visited your dentist faithfully in the past, but then life got busy, your schedule changed, you were overwhelmed or maybe you had an experience that wasn’t as positive as you had hoped. Now you are finding that it’s been two, three, five years or longer since your last dental appointment. Where do you go from here?

Well, no matter what your reasons were for not visiting a dentist, we want to encourage you to return! Recent research (please use this link!) 🙂

has established the connection between your oral health and your overall health. This is one of the many reasons you should check in with your dental health team to ensure there are no concerns with your oral health.

Our team at Sunrise Centre Dental is here to support you to make sure your smile stays happy and healthy! We provide a caring and comfortable environment for patients of all ages and we want to welcome you to your appointment, even if you are a bit overdue!

As you prepare yourself for your next dental appointment, you’re probably wondering what to expect after such a long time. Here are four things you can expect at your next visit:

  1. Your Appointment May Take Longer Than Usual

Your first visit to the dentist after a few years away will most likely take longer than usual. A thorough examination must be completed. We ask you arrive at the office a few minutes before your scheduled appointment so that you can fill out an updated health history form. This gives your hygienist and Dr. John and Dr. Sharon Koncan an overview of your overall health. Please remember to bring a list of your current medications with you to this visit.

  1. You’ll Have Dental X-Rays Taken

Our team will want to be able to look at a full view of your teeth and the structure of your mouth; both what we can see above and below your gums as well as between your teeth to ensure that everything is healthy. We may update or take some different types of dental x-rays to show us what cannot be seen by the naked eye. The technology surrounding our digital x-rays means there is little to no concern with exposure to radiation when updating your x-rays.

  1. You’ll Undergo A Thorough Oral Examination

After evaluating your dental x-rays, the hygienist and dentist will assess your gum health and each tooth. They will be looking for oral concerns such as cavities, gum disease, signs of oral cancer and any discrepancies with how your teeth function together. If there are any concerns noted the hygienist or dentist will recommend treatment options and schedule any follow-up appointments that may be required.

  1. You’ll Have Your Teeth Professionally Cleaned

Everyone has some amount of deposit that cannot be removed, even with a proper home care (brushing + flossing regularly!) between regular dental visits. If it has been a longer period of time away from your dentist, you may have concerns with gum tenderness and bleeding — this may be heightened after you return to see the hygienist. You will be provided with the tools and tips you need in order to get your gum health back on track.
