Oral Health

Sedation & General Anesthesia

General Anesthesia

Also called sleep dentistry, general anesthesia can relieve pain and anxiety by making a patient unconscious during dental procedures. For patients with intense dental fear or those who need major dental procedures, sleep dentistry presents an option that is both comfortable and practical.

At Sunrise Centre Dental,  a medical physician provides the general anaesthetic or sedation services, and the dentist provides the dental services. Sleep dentistry has helped many patients overcome profound anxieties about dental procedures that stand in the way of optimal oral health.

Oral Conscious Sedation

Patients who feel stressed about dental work, as well as those who need multiple procedures performed in one visit may benefit from conscious sedation.

The procedure involves taking an oral sedative prior to your treatment.  You will begin to relax and will not recognize pain, so the dentist can perform your dental work while you stay completely comfortable.  You will require a driver to take you home after your appointment.

Nitrous Oxide Sedation

For those with mild anxiety, Nitrous Oxide, also known as laughing gas, may be an effective way to calm your nerves without the use of heavier sedatives.  If you have received nitrous oxide and local anaesthetic only for procedures,  you will be able to drive yourself home and continue your daily activities as normal.

Implant Placement & Restoration

Dental implants are surgically placed into the jawbone underneath the gum tissue as a “new root” where the tooth is missing.  After the implant has integrated into the bone, an artificial, natural-looking tooth is attached to it.  Dental implants are maintained with regular hygiene appointments just as your normal teeth are.

Wisdom Tooth Extractions

Impacted wisdom teeth can be removed with general anaesthesia or sedation in our office.

Emergency Dental Services

Most dental emergencies will be seen the same day.  Call our office at 705-789-2369

Gum Therapy

Our professional team of hygienists and doctors will work with you to determine the care that best suits your needs. We routinely monitor your bone levels and gum tissue heights to be sure to note changes early. A schedule of routine maintenance appointments will be made specifically to support your best dental health.

Gum disease does not happen over night and treatment is usually spread out over time as the effectiveness of a procedure will be assessed before taking the next step.

The Sunrise Centre Dental hygiene team will work to help you perfect your home-care skills so that you can maintain an optimum level of oral health.

Hygiene Services

Brushing at least two times a day and flossing every day is a necessary part of keeping your smile healthy and beautiful between visits to your dentist; it is most effective when combined with professional dental hygiene visits.

Our team of dental hygienists at Sunrise Centre Dental will assess the health of your bone and gums, provide fluoride treatments when indicated, provide therapy to prevent and reverse gum disease, discuss your specific situation and provide you with the knowledge of how to maintain your dental health for a lifetime. If you have questions about what toothpaste is the best for you, or how to keep your breath feeling and smelling fresh, or whether whitening is an option for you, we are happy to discuss these with you. Your best dental health is our goal.

Crowns

Crowns are used to protect the visible part of the tooth in the mouth.  Because they cover the entire tooth and are cemented to stay permanently, they give strength to a tooth that has had large fillings in it.  Crowns can be made out of porcelain/ceramic, gold alloy, or a combination of both. Dental crowns are often referred to as “dental caps”.

3-D Digital X-Ray Technology

Sunrise Centre Dental offers cutting-edge 3-D X-ray Technology.  This technology reduces radiation and provides significantly more detail to enhance the predictability of dental procedures and optimize surgical outcomes.  By providing this technology in Huntsville at our dental office, we are able to reduce the need for visits to specialists outside the Muskoka area.

TMJ (TMD) Therapy

Symptoms of temporo-mandibular joint dysfunction (TMD) may mimic several other conditions and can be difficult to diagnose.

Common symptoms may include:

  • Neck and/or shoulder pain
  • Popping and clicking with/without paint
  • Ear symptoms, including hearing loss, ringing, or pain
  • Clenching/grinding your teeth during sleep
  • A chronic feeling of tiredness
  • Ongoing headaches at your temples or above your eyes

The Sunrise Centre Dental team will be happy to perform a comprehensive examination and recommend a treatment plan based on your specific symptoms and concerns.  Should we determine the need to get other treatment partners involved—such as orthodontists, chiropractors, physiotherapists or massage therapists—we can recommend potential treatment partners and can work together to relieve your symptoms.

Cosmetic Services

Teeth Whitening

Drs. John and Sharon Koncan offer a variety of professional-grade teeth whitening solutions.  We are also aware of over-the-counter options that may be effective for your situation.  If your teeth are looking dull, or you would like to consider options for whiter teeth, our team can discuss some options for your consideration.

Porcelain Veneers

Veneers are thin layers of ceramic material that is cemented onto the outside surface of the tooth to disguise discolourations and/or balance the size and shape of teeth.  They are a conservative way to change the colour/shape of your front teeth without removing too much of the enamel.

Implant Placement & Restoration

Implants are placed to be essentially a “new root” in the bone that can have a crown placed on top or be used to give support for a denture.  There are many types of attachments that can be used once the implant has healed into the bone.

Bridges

A bridge is a permanent way to “fill a gap” that exists where there is a missing tooth.  It does not come out every day but is cleaned as your natural teeth are cleaned.  If you are having difficulty because you have a missing tooth, ask Dr. Koncan if a bridge may be the solution for you.

Bonded Fillings

Natural-looking Composite Restorations

New dental materials can be bonded to enamel which is like putting a filling in with “super glue”.  Resin is also used for bonded veneer restorations to cover discolouration or to close spaces between teeth.

Full Mouth Restoration

If you have severely worn your teeth and/or have missing teeth you may be noticing some difficulty chewing and speaking. Sunrise Centre Dental can help with full mouth restorative treatment. Sunrise Centre Dental can give you some options to get your old smile back with teeth that look good, feel good and are set up to last a lifetime.

Porcelain Inlays/Onlays

Inlays and onlays are porcelain fillings that are cemented into the tooth.  These restorations are done in two appointments – one to prepare and take moulds, and the second to cement the permanent fillings.  Porcelain is a durable material that looks like enamel.
